The power of Birth Documentary Photography

Newborns are where I began, as a photographer.  Working at a couple of local hospitals, and photographing over 1,000 babies and families over the course of the first couple years, I fell in love with the process of birth, and of course, those cuddly sweet newborns ❤

Birth is beautiful.  Documenting it fills my heart with joy, and it is impossible not to fall in love with the families, the children, and the process.  There is enormous power in the moments leading up to a birth, such community and strength.  And so much more to a birth than the crowning moment, or the first breath.   There are hours of labor, of love, of support, of the environment, of the details… for many families, births are one of the most special and defining moments in their lives.  Every birth I witness is an epic journey.  No matter how many children the mother has had.  No matter how prepared or surprised by labor.  No matter if it is in a hospital or a birthing center, an operating room or a delivery room, it is ALWAYS remarkable to witness, and an incredible gift to the family, to have that moment captured forever. No matter what is felt, what is said in those sacred hours, no matter the circumstances, each story is a Dance of Truth.  Truth of the Body, Truth of the Spirit.  At no other time in our lives are we, as women, forced to face that kind of urgent and consuming Truth.

So, as my first photography blog, it is only appropriate that I pay homage to where my love of photography began: with a birth.  And what a special one it was…this brave mama planned for a VBAC, after overcoming the trauma of a very difficult first birth.  And she gathered her tribe, to support that effort.  Highest praise for doula Pamela Sauls, (Your Birth Helper) who coached and assisted with unflagging dedication over a full day of hospital labor, and who used every trick in the book to keep VBAC on the table.    Also, the steady encouragement of her husband, Larry, and a supportive hospital staff,  Jennifer Crumpler, nurses Lexi and Nancy, and the entire team- ten people in the room at the time of delivery.  I was honored to be asked to document the process, and along with everyone else, poured all my energy into supporting one of the strongest, bravest, most humble and beautiful women I know.  Rachel, you are loved!

I am so grateful for the photography service I am able to offer, and endlessly inspired by the brave women and the husbands and family and medical staff who support them during their time of Truth.

test blog: Naptime meals

 

 

Bear with me- trying to figure out which format I like, blogging is a new thing to me… so, here’s a silly post just to have something to play around with ❤

It occurred to me recently, that I haven’t taken the time to make a meal just for myself in a very long time…. and the only time I have is when the stars align and the kids nap, just after their lunchtime.   So, here’s to resolving to fix a meal for myself at least once a weekfbblog12

I had these roasted pumpkin seeds, from Halloween.. and decided to come up with a yummy way to eat them.

fbblog13I also had some huge prawns in the freezer.   Yep, pasta and prawns are the perfect 30 minute meal…   So, I started by marinating them in a little orange juice and tequila and salt, while I prepped everything else.  (don’t worry, this isn’t a boozy recipe, the tequila is just for marinating!)

So, I started off by putting a pot of water on, to boil, and roasting some tomatoes– cut them in half, drizzle a little olive oil, and salt, and get them nice and toasty

when the tomatoes are nice and roasty, put them in the baby food processor (it’s gotta be useful for something other than baby food puree, right?)   …or a food processor if you’re a fancy adult 😉fbblog8

 

use a little EVOO to roast some minced garlic, put the roasted tomato puree in, and a few chipotle chiles en adobo.  Simmer it all up for a few minutes until it smells like heaven.fbblog10

Add the jumbo shrimp and about half a cup of cream- cook until they’re just done through and the sauce thickens up.

 

 

 

fbblog3These are the toppings I’m guessing will be tasty sprinkled on top:  a green onion, some parmigiano-reggiano, avocado, and pumpkin seeds.

 

fbblog5when the pasta is done, pour the sauteed shrimp mixture in and mix it up.  Put on a plate and sprinkle on the toppings.   And a little pepper.fbblog4I don’t generally measure anything when I’m cooking- it takes too much of the fun out of it 😉  this was a bit spicy, I might add less garlic next time (sorry in advance for some spicy nursing in a few hours, kiddo!)
